Firefighters Memorial Day

Firefighters Memorial Day is on Tuesday 4th May and is a day of international solidarity and remembrance for all firefighters and fire and rescue service workers across the world. We are once again calling for a visible act of remembrance for the bravery and sacrifice of all firefighters who have died in the line of duty, including over 2,300 UK firefighters who have lost their lives whilst serving their communities. 

As we are all too aware, the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic are still upon us and we must all ensure that our recognition of Firefighters Memorial Day is undertaken in a safe manner.

Therefore, in the tradition of past years and building on the experience of 2020, we are asking for a minute’s silence to be undertaken as a public display of commemoration and solidarity outside of fire stations and other Fire and Rescue Service workplaces, but that this is done whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines. The minute's silence should begin at 12 midday and, as has now become custom, should be called and ended by the sounding of appliance sirens or other appropriate means.

The messages of support received in previous years, shows the powerful impact that Firefighters Memorial Day has on the public and all those who witness it. I hope that all members will be able to participate and to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty.
