All FBU members will be united in our condemnation of the horrific and barbaric attack in Manchester, an assault on ordinary people going about their lives, which ruthlessly targeted children and young people.
The thoughts and condolences of all of us will have been with those who lost family and friends, and the best wishes of all of us will be with those injured.
On the day after the attack, I was able to visit Manchester in order to meet our members and officials. This included a discussion with the Executive Council member, regional secretary and brigade secretary. We were also able to speak to some of those members who had attended the incident, who were able to provide details of the incident, including various concerns which had arisen. We met the Chief Fire Officer and have begun a dialogue with the mayor.
You may be aware of press reports regarding the fire and rescue service intervention. We are aware of these and of the various issues raised. Our officials have started the process of speaking to every FBU member who attended the incident in order to establish the details of the incident, mobilisation, operational and related matters.
The FBU will fully investigate the incident as we do in any such circumstances. You will appreciate the need for accuracy in this and that this process inevitably takes some time. We will provide further updates and information when available.
