FBU members, like others in the public sector, have already suffered from a pay freeze since 2010. You will be aware that the Chancellor has also stated that he wishes to see public sector pay limited to maximum increases of 1%. He has also expressed his desire to see a shift away from national bargaining on pay in the public sector. If achieved, these policies will have the effect of further attacking the living standards of FBU members and others in the public services in support of economic policies which have so far completely failed to boost growth and have instead produced growing unemployment and increased hardship for millions of families.
Fire Service pay is not set centrally by Government but is negotiated with the Fire and Rescue Service Employers through the National Joint Council. We have today registered a claim for an increase in pay for 2012 based upon the Retail Price Index available in June. The claim letter is attached.
We shall be seeking prompt discussions with the Employers following their receipt of this claim and will report on this further at the earliest opportunity.
