The Fire Brigades Union will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2018 and in the run up to this momentous occasion the union is today launching the Firefighters 100 Lottery – on the 98th anniversary of the founding of the FBU. The first draw will take place on 5 November 2016.
The Firefighters 100 Lottery will raise funds to help the families of firefighters who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.
It’s a common misconception that a firefighter's family will be automatically taken care of if they are killed or injured on the job, but there are significant gaps in the support and financial assistance available to the families caught up in these tragedies. It is heart-breaking to see families go through the trauma of losing a loved one only then to see their lives consumed by money troubles when they should be left in peace to mourn and then to re-build their lives.
Each and every FBU member will know that their colleagues would always stand by their families if the worst were to happen – firefighters stick together. The Firefighters 100 Lottery is another way in which we can make sure that the families of our brothers and sisters who need support are looked after.
Funds raised from the Firefighters 100 Lottery will also help to fund dedicated memorials to fallen firefighters, and to support research into the wellbeing of firefighters including their physical and mental health. The lottery money will help us make sure lessons from tragedies are learned and, more importantly, remembered in order that today’s firefighters – and the public they serve – are better protected.
