National womens school 2023 c Jess Hurd

Equality is a trade union principle and an FBU priority. We make sure that the voice of our women members is organised, heard and listened to by people in power.

We know that the best people to organise women firefighters and understand our issues are women themselves. That’s why we are the only organisation in the Fire & Rescue Service to have a dedicated body of elected women fighting specifically for the interests of women firefighters and emergency fire control staff.

The national women’s committee of the Fire Brigades Union is an elected group of women members, seeking to:

  • Identify, resolve and promote all issues affecting women in the fire service
  • Progress equality and diversity issues in the workplace
  • Actively promote and support the FBU's policy of eradicating bulling and harrassment in the workplace
  • Create and promote a supportive network for women FBU members
  • Provide and promote education opportunities for women in the FBU
  • Encourage women's participation in mainstream FBU issues
  • Through effective involvement in the trade union movement, equalise opportunities and improve conditions for all women workers
  • Assist and advise other organisations with common goals and aims
  • Advance and pursue international issues

Our work for women firefighters has been recognised by Governments and Industry leaders. We have won enhanced maternity policies, properly fitting PPE, suitable fire station facilities and much more. We are constantly updating our policies and undertaking new initiatives, such as groundbreaking work on the effects of the menopause for operational firefighters.

The FBU national women’s committee makes sure that women firefighters are here to stay. We make sure that women have an effective, powerful voice and are given representation by other strong women when they need it. We demand safety, dignity and opportunity for all our women members and we won’t compromise in our fight to achieve it.
