Reduced crewing and safety

Conference is dismayed at the increases we are seeing regarding Fire and Rescue Services
attempting to introduce new types of fi re service vehicles to respond to emergency incidents
with reduced levels of crewing. It is with great concern that these vehicles, with reduced
crewing, are mobilised to small fi res and limited incidents that often they are not equipped to
deal with and requires them to request further fi re appliances to be mobilised to resolve the
incident they are attending.

Conference is absolutely dismayed that we are now seeing some Fire and Rescue Services
wanting to expand the role of these types of vehicles, with reduced crewing levels, to attend all
types of emergency incidents, including being mobilised when it is known they will be the fi rst
fi re service crews in attendance.

Conference condemns these practices as dangerous and unsafe as well as placing fi refi ghters
in a moral dilemma situation when faced with an emergency rescue situation with not enough
resources to ensure a safe system of work can be implemented, putting both their own life and
that of the person needing to be rescued at further risk of injury or even death.

Conference calls upon all Offi cials, at all levels of the Union, to fi ght and campaign locally and
nationally against the introduction of all types of fi re service vehicles that are crewed with less
than the minimum number of crew required to implement an immediate safe system of work at
all incidents.
