Emergency medical response - mental health deterioration

During the National Joint Councils (NJCs) Emergency Medical Response (EMR) trial, Conference has seen an increase in the number of occurrences of Members suffering some form of mental health deterioration, resulting from either attending EMR incidents or handling these calls in the control room. If any form of EMR is agreed by the NJC or imposed by the Government, it is highly foreseeable that the number of Members suffering from mental health deterioration would escalate.

Conference therefore instructs the Executive Council to produce a guide for offi cials to assist them in ensuring Fire and Rescue Services put in place EMR specifi c mechanisms to; 1. Minimise the occurrences of mental health deterioration resulting from EMR calls. 2. Provide improved support for Members that do suffer deterioration in their mental health resulting from EMR calls. This guide must be available to offi cials prior to any agreement made by the NJC or an imposition by Government, which results in the inclusion of any form of EMR being undertaken by our Members, following the conclusion of the NJC’s EMR trial.
