Firefighter pensions in the aftermath of the general election

The new Tory government presents the FBU with a new situation regarding pensions
and undoubtedly new challenges.

Conference does not accept the imposed 2015 pension schemes.
Conference recognises that the union has consistently won the arguments that the
new pension schemes are unfair, unsustainable and unworkable.

The FBU will continue to make the case at Westminster and with other governments
that the changes to the pension schemes are unacceptable to firefighters and
damaging to the fire and rescue service.

The FBU will continue with our political campaign. We will work with sympathetic MPs
and other political representatives to articulate our case.

The union will refine and expand our arguments and continue to exert pressure on
governments to improve the current pension schemes.

The FBU will continue to explore all legal avenues and work with the union’s solicitors
to this end.

The FBU has taken over 50 periods of strike action, as well as prolonged periods of
action short of strike, in order to advance our case. The union congratulates members
for the unity and strength shown so far in taking action to defend our pensions.

The pension schemes remain unfair, unworkable and contain different elements in
Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, which ultimately result in different
benefits for firefighters.

The Executive Council will assess the new situation and consult with members in
every brigade.

The Executive Council will continue with a strategy that integrates our political, legal
and industrial action – and takes account of the other attacks we face.
Conference agrees to mobilise our members to bring the greatest pressure possible
on the Westminster government and other governments to improve the pensions of all
firefighters.

The Executive Council will keep members informed through circulars, films, bulletins
and other means, so that members are ready to renew action if and when necessary.
The FBU message to the new Westminster government and to other governments is
that we are not going away and we will continue to fight for pensions for firefighters
which properly reflect the challenges of their occupation.

Conference reaffirms that the FBU’s pension dispute is not resolved and our campaign
will continue.
