Policy text
This Conference condemns the coalition Government’s removal of centrally set
employment targets and other equality monitoring in UK Fire & Rescue Service (FRS).
It has been shown historically that if Government does not equality audit the Fire
Service the likelihood of progress is diminished. The removal of employment targets
has also given the UK FRS a green light to reject the principle of making our Fire
Services more reflective of the communities it serves.
Since Government policy on equality monitoring has changed there has been a
steady decline in the employment of the BME community into the Fire Service. Any
percentage rise is due to job cuts and the retirement of white male employees.
This Conference demands that Head Office request a meeting with the Fire Minister to
raise the issue of equality monitoring and diversity in the UK FRS. Any subsequent
meeting to include representatives of the FBU Equality Sections.
