Rape awareness campaign

Conference is appalled to learn that the conviction rates for rape in England and
Wales is only six percent, as reported by Yvette Cooper to the 2012 Labour Party
Conference.

Conference is aware of the many campaigns being organised across the UK that deal
with attitudes towards rape, such as the campaign “this is not an invitation to rape
me” organised by Scottish Rape Crisis.

Over a number of years, various pieces of research have been carried out which have
looked into professional and public attitudes towards rape. The results show that a
significant amount of people surveyed have little sympathy for the survivors of rape
and in fact often blame them for the rape taking place.

Conference therefore calls upon the Executive Council to organise a workplace
campaign in 2013 that directly tackles and challenges the common myths and
perceptions of the reasons why women get raped.
