Political engagement

Conference applauds the previous work carried out by Members and Officials of this
Union in engaging with Councillors and Politicians at a local and national level.
However, over the years both local and national disputes have shown that sometimes
the political work we do has on a number of occasions proved ineffective in achieving
a satisfactory outcome when campaigning to defend our service, protect our
conditions or safeguard the public.

Conference therefore instructs the Executive Council to carry out an immediate review
of the political activity at every level in this Union with a view to making
recommendations on the most effective and efficient method of lobbying MP’s and
Councillors in every UK Fire and Rescue Service, in order to resist further cuts to our
already beleaguered service.

Conference demands that this review commences immediately with a report and
strategy being made available to Brigade Officials before the end of 2013.
