Guantanamo - save Shaker Aamer

British resident Shaker Aamer has now been incarcerated in the United States
detainment and interrogation prison camp at Guantanamo Bay for over 11 years and
is the last UK resident still held; this is despite Shaker being cleared for release by the
Bush administration in 2007.

Since his initial arrest, Shaker has not been charged with any offence, he has not
received a trial and his British lawyer says he is totally innocent. During this time he
has faced brutal treatment on an almost daily basis, which has affected both his
physical and mental health.

This Conference reiterates its opposition to the US Government’s illegal detention of
all the prisoners at the Guantanamo military prison, and in the case of Shaker Aamer,
calls on the Executive Council to:


• Support organisations such as Reprieve and Amnesty International who are
  fighting to secure the immediate release of Shaker so he can return to his
  ​wife and children in London.
• ​Encourage FBU members to support the ‘Save Shaker Aamer’ Campaign.
