European Election 'Hope Not Hate' Campaign

Conference reiterates its condemnation of the BNP as a far right racist organisation whose main policy is to incite hatred and division in society. It is noted that the BNP will be standing candidates in the European elections on the 4th June 2009 and their leader, Nick Griffin, will be standing as a Member of the European Parliament for the North West. Conference recognises the danger that this poses to the safety and security of all sections of our communities as the BNP attempt to gain a foothold in mainstream politics. Historically, European elections have a relatively low voter turnout. Because the voting system for the European elections is a form of proportional representation, Conference recognises the importance of there being a high voter turnout in order to ensure BNP candidates do not win any seats on the 4th June. To this end, Conference instructs the Executive Council to write to all FBU members immediately following Conference, reminding members of the importance of there being a high voter turnout, and to urge all members to physically support their local ʻHope Not Hateʼ Group in the final stages of the anti BNP European election campaign.
