Officials from the Fire Brigades Union has agreed new structures for the organisation in Scotland.
The FBU’s restructure follows the creation of a single Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, which replaced eight regional services in April 2013.
Within the FBU in Scotland, seven new districts will be created within three areas: three in the west, two in the north and two in the east. The Scottish regional committee is currently considering where the district’s boundaries will lie, but they will reflect the areas covered by local senior officers and local authority boundaries as much as possible. To maximise democratic accountability, they should also aim to ensure a balance of membership numbers between the different districts.
District committees will be made up of representatives from every branch in the district, and each district will elect a chair and secretary by ballot of all its members. District chairs and secretaries will all attend and vote at Scottish regional committee meetings.
FBU officials from the districts within each of the three areas (north, east, and west) will also appoint a liaison for management at that level (provisionally called a joint secretary).
The Scottish Regional Committee will also appoint three brigade organisers for Scotland, responsible for recruiting and organising members.
