Mid and West Wales chief fire officer pay out “an insult” during huge service cuts, say firefighters
Reacting to news that Richard Smith, the retiring chief fire officer for Mid and West Wales fire and rescue service, is to receive a £67,000 payoff, Cerith Griffiths, Fire Brigades Union secretary for Wales, said: “This is an insult to firefighters who are working so hard to keep the public safe in the face of the biggest cuts in the fire service’s history.
“They’re reducing firefighter numbers and cutting both stations and engines across the country, and firefighters are having their pensions slashed, yet the service can apparently afford a payoff for a senior officer?
“This payoff would pay for two frontline firefighters for a year. If Mr Smith wanted to show his respect to the service, he would donate his payoff to help stem job losses.”
