Fire Brigades Union national demonstration

Firefighters, Fire Officers and Emergency Fire Control Staff from all over the United Kingdom will be demonstrating in Liverpool on Friday 13 July in support of striking FBU members in Merseyside.

The demonstrators will assemble at Kings Dock, Liverpool at 12.30 pm and will set off at approximately 1.00pm to march through Liverpool, culminating in a rally at Exchange Flags, Off Dale Street, at approximately 2.30 pm, where they will be addressed by FBU General Secretary Andy Gilchrist.

Following a massive 83% Yes vote for strike action the first strike is due to start at 09.00 on Friday 13 July and will last for eight consecutive days.

The dispute is over the Chief Fire Officer’s and the Fire Authority’s refusal to adhere to unanimous decisions of the Fire Service National Disputes Panel.

FBU General Secretary, Andy Gilchrist said: “FBU members from all over the country will be descending on Merseyside to support their comrades who have been forced out on strike action by Chief Fire Officer, Malcolm Saunders, supported by the Merseyside Fire & Civil Defence Authority.

"This strike is totally unnecessary as we have a nationally agreed procedure for resolving disputes within the Fire Service. The Fire Brigades Union used this procedure and the National Disputes Panel ruled unanimously in our favour. Chief Fire Officer Malcolm Saunders supported by the Fire Authority decided to completely ignore the Panel’s unanimous decision. Our members were therefore left with no option other than to withdraw their labour.”
