Merseyside firefighters and emergency fire control operators start ballot for strike action

PRESS CONFERENCE – WEDNESDAY 6 JUNE 2001 AT 11.30 am
MTUCURC CONFERENCE ROOM, 24 HARDMAN STREET, LIVERPOOL

The FBU are holding a press conference at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday 6th June 2001 at MTUCURC, 24 Hardman Street, Liverpool.

A Fire Service strike in Merseyside now looks inevitable as the Fire Authority are continuing to support their CFO, Malcolm Saunders, in his attempts to ignore National Conditions of Service.

Les Skarratts, Merseyside FBU Brigade Secretary said:

“Fire Brigades Union members are disappointed that the Merseyside Fire & Civil Defence Authority are continuing to support such an egotistical Chief Fire Officer, especially after the recent Appeal Court findings, which as a direct result of Mr. Saunders’ actions, cost the West Yorkshire Fire Authority approximately £2.7 million plus legal costs.

FBU members are now at the end of their tether with Merseyside Fire Authority and Chief Fire Officer Malcolm Saunders.

It now seems that we have no other option than to ballot for strike action against this CFO & Fire Authority as they have completely ignored the decisions of the Fire Service National Disputes Committee and are continuing to act outside of the Fire Service National Conditions of Service.”
