During the 1930s, The Firefighter was issued as an occasional publication, providing information about the FBU's annual conference to the union's members. Firefighter was published as a regular journal or newspaper from March 1940 onwards, as the demands of the Second World War made good communication vital.

All issues of the journal from 1947 to 2001 are available online, and many (but not all) issues from 1932-1946 are also included. The online collection also includes The Fire Brigade Union's Fifty Years of Service, 1918-1968, a pamphlet celebrating the first 50 years of the FBU.
