Launch of FBU “NO2 Fire Deaths” campaign

Circular: 2004HOC0275MF

Dear Brother / Sister

The Union’s Executive Council launched our NO2 Fire Deaths Campaign at the House of Commons on Tuesday 27 April 2004, before MP’s and other invited representatives from the fire industry.

The Union has long argued for a risk based approach to emergency cover, that prioritises the saving of lives, and we have called on the Government to join us in adopting a zero tolerance of Fire Deaths. The Executive Council will be presenting it’s National Report on Integrated Risk Management Planning to Annual Conference, and have agreed that the debate will be carried live via a webcast on the Union’s website (, commencing at approximately 09.30 – 09.45 hours on Thursday 13 May 2004.

Following Conference, the Union will be publicly launching the National Report at “Walesfire”, to be held in Tenby on 27 and 28 May 2004, and the report will be circulated to all branches on that day.

The Union would like to see Zero Fire Deaths as a key driving target in the Fire and Rescue Service of the future, and has put £10,000 towards research in to wireless smoke and heat detector/alarms, which could help achieve this aim, and we have called on all Fire Authorities and the Government to match this pledge. Full details of this initiative will be in the National Report.

Members will be kept informed of developments as the campaign progresses, and this will hopefully include the full and active support of members throughout the Union.

Best wishes.

Yours fraternally

General Secretary
