FIRE CREWS, LOCAL POLITICIANS AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO MARCH OVER CONTINUING CONCERNS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF FIRE COVER IN FALMOUTH
Representatives of fire crews from across Cornwall and the South West region will be marching together with local politicians and members of the public on Saturday 5th January 2008 at 1000 from Falmouth Fire Station to Events Square in the town centre. The rally has been organised to highlight the continued threat to night time emergency fire cover at Falmouth, with a decision to be made at the next county council meeting on the 15th January.
Terry Nottle, Cornwall FBU brigade secretary said: “We welcome the news about Camborne but there is no reason why the threat should remain over Falmouth. They have reprieved Camborne without the promised detailed risk assessment, so why not do the same for Falmouth?”
“From a professional view there is no information to support the decision to leave Falmouth with the threat still hanging over it. We came into this campaign determined to save 24-hour immediate response cover at both stations and that resolve remains.”
Mike Tremellen, Cornwall FBU brigade chair said: “The rally on Saturday has been organised because fire crews, local politicians and the public still care enough about the potential loss of cover in Falmouth and realise the effect this could have on the town and the surrounding areas that rely on this immediate response. The rally on Saturday will hopefully prove to the county council that Falmouth and the surrounding area need to maintain 24 hour fire cover.”
