Please find latest review of the FireControl National Business Case from the experts at the Institute of Public Finance together with the union’s own report. Together they make up the union’s submission to the formal consultation.
The IPF review examines what is in the business case, it is not a review of how well or badly the Project has been run to date and does not look at the ‘fire service’ issues which we deal with in our report. Both identify key issues in what remains a troubled project.
The FBU has always had serious concerns that rising costs – all the costs, not just the ones the Government wants to count – will result in scarce financial resources being stripped away from frontline services. We believe this has already started to happen.
This project has already failed financially, as the promised savings will never emerge. It has failed politically because there is little support from within the fire service, even from the usual cheerleaders.
The tremendous technical challenges may still mean it will fail from a technical perspective. Further delays and more technical challenges may well finish it off.
We are sending this report to fire authority councillors, chief officers, chairs of fire authorities and heads of finance. We will continue to highlight our very real concerns about this unwanted Project which is dragging our service down.
